As I have previously stated, I live in one of the most beautiful regions in France (perhaps in the world!) So, After partying with assistants over the weekend and then traveling solo in Barcelona, I decided to save some money and spend my second week of vacation here in the Côte d’Azur, discovering my own city and region. Vacation went like this:
Saturday 10/26– I was a hermit. I slept and vegged all day in my studio-I was so exhausted from Barcelona I didn’t leave all day.
Sunday 10/27– Toulon is surrounded by mountains, so there are opportunities for hiking, so I took the téléphérique to the top of Mount Faron here in Toulon. My friend Maria, her friend Anna, and myself hiked for about 2 hours. There were some seriously amazing views and I feel like this is something I could do every Sunday for a break from the city. Afterwards, we ate at Chez Gringo, a hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant in Toulon.
Monday 10/28- It was beautiful and humid so I attempted to go to the island of Porquerolles, a popular French tourist destination just a 40 minute ferry ride away from the ports. Unfortunately, the buses and ferries were too infrequent due to the vacation week, so I would have only had about two hours in the island. I therefore decided to just come back another time (probably in spring when it’s warmer) and instead spend the afternoon exploring Hyeres, which is the neighboring, lovely town from which the ferries to Porquerolles leave! (I went to the Hyeres beaches last month, but never to the city!) That night I went to the weekly Couchsurfing conversation group, which really lifted my spirits, and then finished the night by enjoying a few drinks with my French at a bar near my studio.
Tuesday 10/29-Wednesday 10/30- Some of the Toulon assistants went to Nice. Even though I have already gone, I just decided to come along so I wasn’t by my lonesome in Toulon. (And I had a great time!) I stayed with an assistant I met while I was visiting Nice back in September.
Thursday 10/31- The main part of my day was filled with grocery shopping, laundry, yoga, and then celebrating Halloween until 5 AM. read about my Halloween adventures here.
Friday 11/1- Joyeuse Toussaint! I slept in and then spent the afternoon reading on the beach, strolling through the daily markets, cleaning, and then playing cards with my friends Maria and Anna.
Saturday 11/2- Some of the assistants and myself took a day trip to St. Tropez visit. That night I enjoyed dinner and drinks with my colleague!
Sunday 11/3– My colleague invited me to a jewelry exhibition, where her friend was selling her work (and I bought a sweet ring!) otherwise I went on a run, planned my lessons, and just got ready for the week.
Now I am back at work, but we have a three-day weekend coming up (no school on Monday due to L’Armitice (France’s version of Veteran’s Day), so I’m off to enjoy the weekend in Marseille, the 2013 European Capital of Culture, and the second biggest city in France!)
