Some of you liseurs and liseures may remember my post about the word Mademoiselle and the French feminists’ accusations of its sexist connotations (meaning unmarried, virgin, stupid, etc). For years French feminists have been actively trying to omit the word Mademoiselle from the language. Well, alas, they’ve done it– SUCCESS!! As of now, the French declare that a woman’s marital status should no longer matter- the word Mademoiselle is going to start filtering out on official documents. Perhaps with time the word will filter itself out of the language’s vocabulary (but I doubt it, at least for the next 20 years). I am really ecstatic about this because it shows true progress towards gender equality. Changing the attitudes of society is the first step of many in reaching gender equality in France, the United States, and around the world. A simple act such as this one gives me great hope for the western world, especially with the United States’ upcoming presidential election and its emphasis on a woman’s right to contraceptives (as if this should really be a topic, especially among a panel made up entirely of men).
In other words, I now wonder, what should I call myself in front of my students? Also, I’ll need to change the name of my blog URL. Any suggestions ?? Qu’en pensez-vous??
